the use of welfare monitoring tools


To accurately monitor welfare, it is necessary to use a tool which has been validated for use in the laboratory-housed dog. We have developed two welfare monitoring tools (WMTs) which can be used to evaulate welfare in the home pen and during restraint for training or procedures. These tools should be used in conjunction with the photo and video guides to behaviour.

You can download our WMTs by clicking on them below. We recommend that you contact us before implementing the WMTs to ensure that the data collected are valid and can be compared within and between facilities.

This Welfare Monitoring Tool is designed specifically for use when training for restraint while sitting, however it can be used to monitor welfare in all settings which require restraint. The descriptors for the stages of training (A-G) are provided below.
